The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Kaduna State branch, says it plans to provide financial support to 300 of its members to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

Mr Aliyu Tanimu, State President of the union, disclosed this to the newsmen on Monday in Kaduna.

Tanimu said the move was to complement government’s efforts to ease the suffering of the masses, including her members.

He said considering the situation which the withdrawal of fuel subsidy had subjected Nigerians, the union was forced to assist commercial drivers with little money to ease their sufferings.

Tanimu, who doubles as the National Vice President of the union representing the North, explained that the beneficiaries were drawn from the 23 local government areas of the state.

“We thought it appropriate to give them financial support, considering the condition the drivers found themselves due to the removal of fuel subsidy.

“A commercial driver who before the removal of the fuel subsidy conveys passengers to Zaria twice a day, has now been reduced to once a day.

“Others remain at the motor park with no passengers and these are people that have families to cater for,” he said.

He, however, declined to disclose the amount of cash donation but said the disbursement would be carried out without hitches.

According to him: “We have units of our associacion in all the local government areas of Kaduna State from where we will select the beneficiaries.”

Tanimu solicited the continued cooperation of members of the union with the assurance to continue to unite members.
