The Police Command in Anambra has launched a manhunt for a yet-to-be-identified assailants who on Monday attacked security operatives and unarmed civilians in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra.
The command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.
Ikenga said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Nnaghe Itam, who visited the scene in Ihiala ordered an immediate manhunt of the assailants.
He explained that the unfortunate attack was carried out around 11:20 a. m. as it resulted in the death of seven persons among which were two unarmed passers-by.
According to him, the Joint Security Team rescued one of the victims who is currently responding to treatment in a hospital.
“The CP while on an on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene interviewed some eye witnesses on the incident.
“Information also had it that the armed men started shooting sporadically at a venue where preparations are ongoing for a burial ceremony slated for 2nd of Jan., 2025.
“While escaping the scene, the armed men shot at two security operatives at a security Observation Post close to the local government headquaters by the express road,” he said.
He noted that the commissioner extended his condolences to the families and friends, especially the good people of Ihiala over the sad incident.
Itam promised that the perpetrators of the heinous crime would be hunted down.
