Wike to be honoured for constructing Law School's campus

Federal Government approves establishment of the campus which was announced on July 27 by the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma (SAN)

The Executive Governor of Rivers, Mr Nyesom Wike is set to be honoured for the ongoing construction of a new campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt, Rivers.

Supreme reports that the Federal Government's approval for the establishment of the campus was announced on July 27 by the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma (SAN).

The announcement was made during the 2021 Call to Bar ceremony held in Abuja.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday, Mr Lere Fashola, the Convener of the ESQ Nigerian Legal Awards, said that Wike was nominated to be honoured for his invaluable contribution to the legal profession.

Fashola said that Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State would also conferred with an award during the Nov. 7 ceremony which would be held at the Landmark Event Center, Oniru, Lagos.

"Akeredolu will be honoured for his stance on restructuring and his promotion of the rule of law.

"Wike will also be honoured for his stance on restructuring and challenging the status quo regarding the Value Added Tax matter, because fiscal federalism has been the core of Nigeria's issues." he said.

The convener said that the panellists would analyse various landmark transactions that have happened over the course of 18-months by law firms and legal departments of companies.

"This year we relied heavily on a lot of international ranking and research institutions to take a look at all the landmark transactions that has happened in Nigeria between July 2019 and December 2020.

"This year we have received over 500 nominations cutting across 24 different sectors," he said.

Fashola said some of the awardees include; Chief OCJ Okocha (SAN) Ex-President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Life Member of the Honourable Body of Benchers and Mr Gbenga Oyebode, MFR, Founder and Chairman, Aluko & Oyebode.

Other recipients are Mrs Beatrice Hamza-Bassey, Board Chairman, Union Bank of Nigeria, Mrs Ronke Sokefun, Board Chairman, Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and Mrs Uto Ukpanah, Company Secretary, MTN Nigeria.
