A medical expert, Dr Abubakar Musa has advised the electorate to imbibe healthy lifestyle and avoid staying long on queues during election exercise to manage stress.

He stated this in an interview with the newsmen in Bauchi on Saturday.

Musa, who is with Department of Public Health, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU – TH), said that election anxiety and stress portend adverse effects on health.

He cautioned the electorate against going to the polling booths without having breakfast or empty stomach as it could result to headache, blood sugar dips, faintness and difficulty in concentration.

The medical expert said those with underlying ailments should adhere to all treatment and safety tips to avoid further complications.

“Take fluid and avoid staying under sun, especially during sunny hours, it is good to stay under shade during the election.

”Those that faint on queues should be given first aid with damp towel or refer to the nearest health facility,” he said.

Musa said the electorate should exhibit jovial mood, remain calm and relax as well as express joy and sadness with caution to avoid stressing the body’s hormones.

“Adrenaline is a stress hormone that has to do with anxiousness, nervousness or pure excitement as your body and mind are preparing for an event,” he added.

He further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure adequate ventilation at the polling centres across the country to enhance safety of voters.
