Join PMTCT programme to prevent HIV, ASWHAN urges pregnant women
At that time, I didn’t know I was HIV-positive because I hadn’t undergone routine tests.

Mrs Rejoice Abah, Coordinator of the Association of Women Living With HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (ASWHAN), FCT chapter, has urged all pregnant women to participate in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) mentorship programme.
Abah gave the advice in an interview with the news men in Abuja on Monday, emphasising that the mentorship programme was vital in reducing the prevalence of mother-to-child HIV transmission.
“I had an unfortunate experience that led to the loss of my child several years ago.
“At that time, I didn’t know I was HIV-positive because I hadn’t undergone routine tests.
“By the time I found out, it was too late, and my baby had already been infected,” Abah said.
The ASWHAN FCT Coordinator highlighted that mentorship programmes were currently available in several facilities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
She encouraged all pregnant women to take advantage of this opportunity, which could help protect both their unborn children and themselves from HIV.
Abah further explained that the programme would not only educate pregnant women on preventive measures but also provide support in managing their HIV status and that of their babies, should they test positive.
Supreme news reports that mother-to-child transmission of HIV (MTCT) occurs during pregnancy, labour, delivery, or breastfeeding. Without interventions such as PMTCT, transmission rates can range from 15 to 45 per cent.
