Songhai Center pledges to build farms in Anambra
Songhai farms system is a regenerative, organic and commercial system of agriculture which could enhance food availability, affordable prices and good return to both the state and farmers.
The Songhai Farm Centre has commended the agricultural policy of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo-led administration in Anambra and promised to set up farms in the state.
Prof. Godfrey Nzamujo, founder and director of the Songhai Centre said the system would help government achieve its objectives within shortest possible time and on a sustainable basis
Nzamujo, a Catholic priest, said the Songhai farms system was a regenerative, organic and commercial system of agriculture which could enhance food availability, affordable prices and good return to both the state and farmers.
He said if the proposal was accepted in Anambra, the organisation would set up three Songhai Farm centres across the three senatorial zones of the state.
He said the Songhai farm system emphasized the use of natural inputs such as organic manure, compost, and livestock manure to boost soil fertility and increase crop yields.
“It is a holistic and sustainable approach to farming that integrates crop cultivation, fish farming, and animal husbandry; it incorporates the use of renewable energy sources such as solar power and biogas to power irrigation systems.
“If eventually domesticated in Anambra, Songhai Centres will be established in the three senatorial zones of the state which will potentially serve as hubs of agricultural innovation.
“It will provide the needed training and resources to farmers, with particular reference to unemployed graduates..
Nzamujo called for the institutionalisation of the Songhai farming system in Anambra as it would have positive outcomes such as income generation, food security and employment creation for the teeming population.
“It will also promote a sustainable environment,” he said.
