The Jigawa Government says it will reintroduce the Inter Local Government football tournament, also known as Governor’s Cup in the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, disclosed this in an interview with the newsmen on Friday in Dutse.

Musa said the decision was taken after government had assessed sports and facilities across the state.

He said that the gesture is aimed at discovering and utilising young talents in the sports sector.

“Having done this assessment on the state of sporting activities in the state, we’ve come up with a strategy on how we can harness sport potential of our teeming youths.

“What we agreed with the governor is to revive the governor’s cup, which will have a component of inter local government,” he said.

The commissioner said that under the tournament, various football clubs across the 27 Local Government Areas of the state are expected to participate in the competition.

According to him, all chairmen of the 27 local government areas have been asked to bring list of five clubs each to compete for the trophy.

Musa stated that the gesture is aimed at taking sports development to the grassroots, as well as assessing the potential of young and talented footballers.

“Our target is not just to have a winner, but to assess the potential of teeming youths at all levels. The overall objective is aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents at the grassroots level.

“It is not just about football but other sports like basketball and volleyball to identify talents,” he said.
