Opobo marathon: 1,500 athletes to compete for $1,000 prize money
The prize money is sponsored by Blessing Fubara, Managing Director of D’Consiglories Nigeria Limited and Hope Initiative.
No fewer than 1,500 athletes will participate in the 2024 Opobo Marathon in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers.
The Project Lead of the competition, Henry Cookey, made this known in an interview with the newsmen in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
He said that the one-day event which would commence on Jan. 4 would see the winner of the competition go home with 1,000 dollars (N1.245 million) prize money.
“The prize money is sponsored by Blessing Fubara, Managing Director of D’Consiglories Nigeria Limited and Hope Initiative.
“About 1,500 participants are expected for the one-day marathon which will surpass previous editions going by the prize money and other consolation prizes,” Cookey said.
The Amayanabo of Opobo kingdom, King Dandeson Jaja, said the competition was widely accepted by the people due to the positive impact previous events had on Opobo communities,“he said.
He said the tournament was one of the important dates in the calendar the people of Opobo look forward to.
“The marathon has become more than just a race because it symbolises unity, health, and celebration of our vibrant community.
“I am pleased to endorse and bless the marathon and wish all the participants a successful and enjoyable experience,” the traditional ruler said.
Sody Peterside, Patron, Opobo Marathon, said that Jaja’s support and endorsement of the competition would lift the spirit of the athletes.
“Our royal father’s blessing and support say so much about how the Opobo people value the marathon.
“This is a testament to the world that we welcome everybody to have a feel of the ancient city of Opobo,” he said.
