Team Nigeria once again went close to winning a medal at the ongoing World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima on Thursday but ended up empty-handed.

Supreme News reports that Ella Onojuvwevwo could only finish fifth in the final of the women’s 400-meter race, after a time of 52.61 seconds.

It was Nigeria’s third appearance in the final of the events at the competition, involving over 1,700 athletes from about 134 countries in Peru.

This was however Nigeria’s second time of placing fifth, while the third instance was seventh since the competition began on Tuesday.

They had on Wednesday placed fifth in the women’s long jump final through Prestina Ochonogor, while Justina Eyakpobeyan placed seventh in the women’s 100m later in the day.

Also, in the 4x400m mixed relay on Tuesday, Team Nigeria placed third but still failed to advance from the opening round’s heat.

NAN reports that Gafari Badmus also placed fifth in the semi-finals of the men’s 400m on Thursday.

Team Nigeria, however, still has hopes of bagging a medal before the competition closes on Saturday, with possible qualification from the women’s 4x400m relay on Friday.

There are also chances of qualification on Friday for Saturday’s finals in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays.
