PEPSA begins cleaning of drains in Jos metropolis to forestall flood

The Plateau Environment Protection and Sanitation Agency( PEPSA) has commenced the cleaning of drains in Jos-Bukuru metropolis to forestall floods as the rainy season sets in.

The Director-General of the Agency, Samuel Dapiya, speaking during the cleaning exercise on Saturday in Jos, said the exercise was aimed at ensuring the drains in the metropolis were cleared of waste that would hinder the free flow of water, which could lead to flooding.

Dapiya said the exercise, aside from averting floods, would also help in tackling health challenges posed by blocked drains.

”These blocked drains, aside from preventing the free flow of water, which could lead to flooding, serve as breeding sites for vectors and rodents that cause diseases in humans.

“This exercise is an effort to create a clean and healthier environment for the populace ,” he said.

Dapiya, called on the public to desist from the act of disposing waste in drains as it was highly detrimental to the society.

He urged them to ensure they dispose their waste properly by dumping them in the dino -bins at designated dump sites .

The D -G, said the agency commenced the exercise with the evacuation of waste at the drains of ECWA Good News Church on Ahmadu Bello way Jos.

He said the agency would continue to make use of its 120 men and the the youths volunteers in the various communities.

He further said that the 10-day exercise, which commenced on March 30, is expected to end on April 8.

The Senior Pastor, of ECWA Goodnews Jos, Ajang Bitrus, commended the agency for clearing the church’s drain.

Bitrus, said that the church would own the project of ensuring that its drains were always clean and void of refuse.

Supreme News reports that the General Manager of Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), Mr. Hart Bankat, and the Acting Zonal Manager of NESREA, Mr. Jude Appiah, were at the exercise to lend their support to PEPSA.
