Kwara to reposition energy sector – Commissioner
The Kwara Government has renewed its commitment to reposition the energy sector by generating electricity for itself.
The state Commissioner for Energy, Mr Abdulazeez Abdulganiy, disclosed this on Thursday in Ilorin while receiving a delegation of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), who visited him in his office.
He said this is in accordance with the Nigeria Electricity Act of 2023, which would ensure an efficiently managed electricity generation, transmission and distribution to adequately promote socio-economic growth in Kwara.
Abdulganiy assured the agency of the state government’s partnership, while appealing for a team work in order to achieve the set goals.
Earlier, Mrs Zainab Aremu, the state Coordinator of NESREA, also called for collaboration with the ministry for proper regulation of the environmental law in the energy sector.
She said: “The purpose of this regulation is to prevent pollution and encourage efficiency in operations of the energy sector in order to achieve sustainable economic development.”
The coordinator added that the regulation is also to carry out environmental assessment and to minimise environmental pollution.
The Chief Scientific Officer, NESREA, Mr Audu Mayowa, further explained that the agency also inspect new project to check if it is environmental friendly and to reduce global warming in the state.
