Sit-at-home: Panic in Ebonyi as gunmen attack traders, burn Police van
On Tuesday, gunmen in Ukwuagba-Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, set fire to a police patrol vehicle.
According to reports, the gunmen's actions were part of a plan to enforce the Indigenous People of Biafra's one-week stay-at-home order.
According to reports, the attackers stormed a nearby police checkpoint and ordered the on-duty officers to flee the scene while they set fire to the van.
Remember that an IPOB splinter group proclaimed a one-week stay-at-home in the Southeast geopolitical zone during the previous week?
In addition to the assault on the Ukwuagba-Ngbo region of the state, the militants approached the Ishieke Campus of the Ebonyi State University and fired randomly into the air.
On Tuesday, they commanded market vendors and motorcycle operators to stop operations.
Ikechukwu Onwe, chairman of the Ohaukwu Council Area, condemned the attacks and called for the cooperation of all parties in the region to thwart the activities of criminals. During a security council meeting held on Tuesday at the council's headquarters in Ezzangbo, Onwe stated that he would take every measure possible to capture the criminals.
In the meantime, the Ebonyi State Government has urged state residents to resume normal activities, claiming that the situation is under control.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Jude Okpor, it was stated, "The Ebonyi State Government has observed with dismay apprehension in certain areas of the state due to the actions of unknown assailants.
"Therefore, the government advises the public to continue with their lawful activities, as security personnel have the situation under control."
