“In view of that, I implore you to speak out against dangerous driving because speed kills more passengers than drivers,” she said.

The Abia Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to drive responsibly and adhere strictly to road traffic regulations during the festive season.

A statement issued by the Sector Commander, Mrs Ngozi Ezeoma, in Umuahia, on Wednesday, emphasised the need for motorists “to be courteous and patient to ensure road safety in Abia”.

Ezeoma also urged passengers to prioritise road safety, while travelling by speaking out against dangerous driving.

She said: “It is important to remind all commuters that road safety is a shared responsibility.

“In view of that, I implore you to speak out against dangerous driving because speed kills more passengers than drivers,” she said.

She further advised motorists in the state to avoid excessive speed, overloading, route violation, drunk driving, use of worn-out or expired tyres, among others, while driving.

The state FRSC boss expressed the determination of the corps to accomplish its mandate of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by more than five per cent.

She said the command was committed to ensuring effective road traffic management and safety administration in Abia.

She, therefore, implored the public to help the command “to continually achieve swift response to emergencies” through FRSC toll-free line – 122, National emergency – 112, and operational lines -09139600903,09139602957,09139602963.

Ezeoma commiserated with the families of the eight persons, who died in Sunday’s fatal road crash within the Mmuri River axis in Ohafia Local Government Area of the state.

She urged the bereaved families to draw some comfort as the corps shared in their griefs.

She also felicitated Christians at Christmas and prayed that they would have a celebration filled with joy and blessings as well as a prosperous New Year ahead.
