It is important to continue strengthening contacts between Russian and African media.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova on Thursday welcomed the expansion of the partnership between the international media group, Rossiya Segodnya and African news media.

“It is important to continue strengthening contacts between Russian and African media.

“This work is underway … Rossiya Segodnya continues to expand its partner network in the region,’’ she told a panel discussion hosted by the Russian parliament.

The spokeswoman told the panel, titled Information Bridge: Russia and Africa, that Rossiya Segodnya signed a cooperation agreement with the Namibia Press Agency and a memorandum of understanding with the Cameroon News Agency in 2024.

The group also continued supporting professional training for media workers through RIA NovostiPro programme.

“Cooperation on organising professional training for journalists and specialists continues through the RIA NovostiPro educational project.

“It includes lectures and workshops,’’ Zakharova said.

Rossiya Segodnya Director General Dmitry Kiselev said in February that editorial centres of the international news agency and radio Sputnik will open in South Africa and possibly in Tanzania.

He said Sputnik was actively operating on the African continent, broadcasting in English and French in Nigeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Mali, Guinea and Zambia.
