Good2Kwon: COOL FACTS ABOUT RIVERS STATE
Rivers State was named after the many rivers that exist and border its territory.
* It was part of the Oil Rivers Protectorate from 1885 till 1893, when it became part of the Niger Coast Protectorate.
* Under the administration of General Yakubu Gowon, decree No. 14 was issued, allowing the creation of Rivers State in May 27, 1967 with the split of the Eastern Region of Nigeria.
* Until 1996 the state now known as Bayelsa State was contained in Rivers State.‎
* Rivers State is currently consisted of 23 Local Government Area.
* The state has over 25 ethnic groups and over 40 different but not entirely distinct dialects. The dominant ethnic groups in the state are Ogoni, Ikwerre and Ijaw.
* Rivers State occupies a total land area of 11077km². Akuku-toru is the largest LGA with 1,443 km² and Ogu-Bolo LGA being the smallest with just 89km².
* Rivers State has had 10 Military Governors. The first was Alfred Diete-Spiff. The last being Sam Ewang.
* It has also had 6 Democratic Governors till date, the first being Melford Okilo and the current being Nyesom Wike.
* Rivers State is the largest producer of crude oil and natural gas in Nigeria, which includes the Niger Delta region.
* Other natural resources that can be found in the state are glass sand, clay, silica sand, palm produce and fish farming agriculture and possible hydro power.
