In our maiden column we discussed education and what it means, we are going to be talking about the importance of that great weapon/tool called education on national development.

Can a nation really attain sustainable development without the development of education? The answer is NO. Reasons being that education reduces the rate of poverty and puts an end to ‘slavery’. The people who live in extreme poverty cannot contribute meaningfully to national development.

• Education reduces wastage: According to Ramanand Gupta Proper and right education transforms human beings to responsible citizen and maximizes the use of human and material resources .

• Education encourages orderliness: In the absence of education or a low coverage of it, disorderliness thrives. There is misplacement of priorities, the people are concerned about what they can get, they live without rules and regulations, which can be very chaotic. Education establishes a working system and strengthens Institutions for better National organization.

• It attracts educated foreign investors: birds of a feather flocks together. when a country has very educated citizens which is a priority for any serious minded leader, the country attracts same in all sectors of the economy globally and not the opposite.

• Education puts an end to slavery: By this we mean education equips the people with the right information and awareness on their civic rights obligations etc.

• In addition a good and sufficient funded education system develops in individuals those values which make for good citizenship, such as honesty, selflessness, tolerance, dedication, hard work and personal integrity, identifying that education despite other good impacts gives moral training as well.

• A tool that lifts people out of poverty: Right knowledge helps the people know the skill(s) really needed to put an end to poverty. This is according to Baba Faiz.

• Education creates balance in society and lays the foundation for National Unity by enshrining sound value systems at the family level to the National level.

In conclusion, are Nigerians not educated? why is Nigeria is not developed? That we would find out in our next edition.
