The association maintained that, if allowed, the introduction of sex education in schools would promote moral decadence among minors in society.

The Association of Christian Schools in Nigeria (ACSN) has commended the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, for directing that sex education be removed from the basic education curriculum.

ACSN gave the commendation in a communiqué issued at the end of its 5th General Assembly with the theme, "Christian Education and the Challenges of Our Time: Need to be Focused and Productive."

The communique, which was signed by the association's National President, Dr Ekaete Ettang, was issued on Friday in Jos.

The association maintained that, if allowed, the introduction of sex education in schools would promote moral decadence among minors in society.

It insisted that sex education should be taught at home by parents instead of in schools, adding that the supposed sex education to be included in the curriculum was alien to Nigerian culture.

"We thank the minister of education for directing the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to remove sex education from the basic education curriculum.

"No doubt it is an attempt at globalization, for which we may see some benefits in terms of preparing our children to compete favorably in the global market, but it cannot be at the expense of the moral values that hold us together as a people."

"Our children do not need to be homosexuals or transgender to be great people; they can be what they want to be without the dangers of corrupt values, which alter the essence of who we are and what we represent."

"We are not against foreign ideas, but we have seen the effects of allowing sex education to be taught in schools; we have seen what it did to families over there, and we don't want it here," the ACSN stated in the communiqué.

The association called on parents to step up their game and give more attention to children at home by teaching them the basics about sex.

"Parents should stop running after money and return to the basics to ensure proper basic education for their children at home."

"We believe if proper sex education is taught at home, it will go a long way in addressing our fears," the ACSN stated.

It also called on religious bodies to move into schools to take on sex education from moral and spiritual perspectives.
