The president of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih has attributed Anuoluwa Opeyori victory to dedication, seriousness and determination.

Supreme reports the tournament was held at the John Barrable Hall in Benoni, South Africa, from Feb.13 to Feb.19.

Orbih stated this on Monday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Supreme reports that Opeyori on Sunday defeated his counterpart from Mauritius, Julien Paul 18-21, 21-13, 21-18 in the final to win the gold medal of the Men’s singles of the All Africa Senior Championships.

The president said that Opeyori was one of the key players of the federation who worked hard to deserve the victory.

He said the sport in Nigeria suffered a setback following an initial internal wrangling that was only resolved in 2022.

“Opeyori`s success is due to his discipline and hardwork. He should maintain his attitude, remain focused and continue putting in extra time to remain on top.

“We are back to reassert our commanding stature in Africa and to make sure that our players have a good outstanding results in their continental and world championship,” he said.

He said that 10 players were meant to go but only six were given visas while four were refused visas.

Opeyori also won the African championship title in Kampala, Uganda in 2022 and won the 2019 African Championship title in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2019 to assert himself as Africa’s undisputable champion.

He had also won the Men’s Singles title at the African Games in Morocco in 2019 to make it four titles in five years.

NAN reports that the 2023 African Badminton Championships is the continental badminton championships to crown the best players and teams across Africa.
