Rector of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo, Dr Salisu Umar, says the institution has installed optic fibre cable broadband across its campuses for internet services.

Umar made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi, Edo, on Thursday.

He said that the installation of the broadband internet services around the campuses was to provide fast transmission of data to the academics, staff members and students.

“In order to key into the competition and be part of some of the best researchers, staffers and students, provision of internet is a crucial part of the structure of an institution of higher learning across the world.

“This is because unreliable internet connection has remained a huge setback.

“If you go around our polytechnic now, you will see the laying of optic fibre everywhere for broadband so that our lecturers and students will no longer have to buy data in the process of doing their research.

“We want to make research just at our palm; bring out your laptop anywhere and you connect to the server,” he said.

The rector said that the institution had produced researchers who had excelled in their various fields.

“We want to move from paper research to actually skilled research.

“I was once a director research and innovation, and because of that, I know the importance of research.

“Before I became the rector, I had organised more than 22 conferences and as chairman of those conferences from 2008, I know the potentials, what it takes and who we need to train,” Umar said.
