The country, unlike Germany and other EU countries, had still drawn an average of 80 per cent of its gas needs from Russian sources this year.
Austria is no longer dependent on Russian gas, the country’s Vienna-based electricity and gas regulator reported on Friday.
The country, unlike Germany and other EU countries, had still drawn an average of 80 per cent of its gas needs from Russian sources this year.
It has now found other potential supply routes, the head of E-Control, Alfons Haber, said.
“Even if Russia stops its supplies, homes will not be cold either this winter or next,” he said.
“This is due to high storage levels, which exceed 90 per cent, and also the possibility of supplies of liquefied natural gas via Germany and Italy, Haber added.
Uncertainty over Russian gas supplies recently rose again.
