Bill for College of Nursing, Midwifery in Bayelsa scales 2nd reading
A Bill to establish the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Amassoma, Bayelsa has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.
This followed the presentation of the general principles of the bill by the sponsor, Rep. Ebikebina Ambaiowei (PDP-LP) at Wednesday’s plenary.
Presenting the bill, Ambaiowei, said the workforce in the health sector in the country required the training of more nurses and midwives.
Ambaiowei said that the bill could not have come at a better time than now.
“It will remedy the unfavourable situation in the health sector and rescue youths being lured into various nefarious activities.
“The bill is anchored on the fact that there is no Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery in Bayelsa State at the moment.
“The aim of this specialised College of Nursing and Midwifery is to train and produce high quality healthcare professionals that will contribute to the development of the health sector.
“The contribution will be in the area of research and medical treatment for the state and the entire country,” Ambaiowei said.
The Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary, put the bill to a voice vote, and it was unanimously endorsed by the lawmakers.
The bill was referred to the House Committee on Health Institution for further action.
