The Niger Delta Civil Society Leaders Forum has called for calm in the escalating tension between former Gov. Nyesom Wike and incumbent Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers.

A statement in Asaba on Wednesday by Mr Okezi Odugala, and Prince Emmanuel Ogan, Chairman and Secretary of the forum, said the rift should be urgently addressed to prevent a backlash on the development of the state..

The statement said: “We recognise that this rift has far-reaching implications for the stability, security, and development of Rivers State, and by extension, the entire Niger Delta region.

”The ongoing feud threatens to undermine the progress made in the state and exacerbate existing social, economic and political challenges.

“In light of this, we are compelled to intervene and embark on a peace mission to broker reconciliation between the two leaders.”

The statement added, ”Our objective is to facilitate a constructive dialogue that addresses the underlying issues, fosters mutual understanding, and promotes peaceful coexistence.”

The group urged Wike and Fubara to prioritize the interests of Rivers and its people above personal and political differences.

The group also appealed to both leaders to engage in constructive dialogue, facilitated by the Forum to resolve their differences and work towards a united goal of developing Rivers .

According to the group, all stakeholders, including political parties, community leaders and citizens are encouraged to support this peace initiative and refrain from actions that may exacerbate the situation.

It also said that the forum would also convene a stakeholders’ meeting to bring together key actors and interest groups to promote understanding and peaceful resolution of the dispute.

It said that it would establish a conflict resolution mechanism to address future disputes and ensure sustainable peace.

“We are committed to working tirelessly to ensure that peace is restored in Rivers State.

“We believe that through collective effort and goodwill, we can overcome the current challenges and build a brighter future for the people of Rivers,” the statement added.
