The Ebonyi State Transport Corporation (EBOTRANS) has called on the government and the private sector to invest more in road transportation businesses in order to boost the economy.

Dr. Simon Idenyi, General Manager, EBOTRANS, made the call on Thursday in Abakaliki in an interview with the newsmen.

The general manager noted that more vehicles on the road and more operators in the business could promote job creation.

Idenyi decried the way the business had remained ineffective and called on the public and private sectors to embrace investing in road transportation.

“Efficient and effective transport facilitates the free flow of people, goods, and services and contributes to productivity in all other sectors of the economy.

“It makes it easier to reach out to rural dwellers. You know, in any business, the more, the merrier.

“We urge the government and individuals to deepen investment in road transportation, and I believe all these issues of no vehicles and passengers’ stranding will no longer be occurring.

“I greet the Ebonyi government; at least we are progressing. We have established branches in many states across the country. We have depots in Rivers, Abia, Imo, Anambra, and Abuja, amongst others.

“We also have local routes within the state, making it possible for the farmers to convey foodstuffs to the city.

“Some of our local routes cut across the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi. We have depots in Ishiagu, Iboko, Okposi, Afikpo, and Uburu routes, among others,” he said.

Idenyi commended the state government of Ebonyi, led by Gov. Francis Nwifuru, for creating an enabling environment to strengthen road transportation businesses in the state.

“Road transportation has a significant impact on economic growth. The business can create jobs and boost the economy. Right now, we have over 1, 000 workers, including our drivers, in the areas where we are operating.

“We have over 300 individuals’ registered vehicles working with us. Our drivers have received training on traffic rules and regulations,” he added.
