Israeli military operation in Nablus kills two Palestinians
Two Palestinians were shot and killed in confrontations with the Israeli military in Nablus in the West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah said on Monday.
According to the Israeli army, the two were suspected of being involved in an attack that injured two soldiers in Huwara.
During the operation, in which the suspects were arrested, the soldiers came under fire and fired back, the Israeli army said.
In addition, military equipment, weapons, ammunition were confiscated.
A vehicle used by the assailant who carried out the shooting attack in the town of Huwara on Feb. 26, in which two Israelis were killed, was also confiscated, the army said.
Additionally, an individual suspected of involvement in terrorist activity was apprehended in the town of Wadi Siman overnight.
The Palestinian town of Huwara has been the scene of violence several times in recent weeks.
At the end of February, a Palestinian shot dead two Israeli brothers. Israeli settlers then set fire to houses, shops and cars. A road runs through the town that is used by many settlers every day.
The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories has long been tense. Since the beginning of the year, 14 Israelis and one Ukrainian woman have been killed in attacks by Palestinians.
In the same period, 91 Palestinians have died in clashes with the Israeli army or after attacks of their own.
Before the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, there were fears of a further intensification, but the first week remained relatively calm.
Experience from previous years has shown that tensions can increase during this time in the region.
