On Monday, lawmakers sat in the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex to commence the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid gunfire and tear gas.

About 23 lawmakers, including the session's presiding officer, Speaker Martin Amaewhule, voted to initiate the process.

The lawmakers also suspended the House speaker, Edison Ehie, and a number of colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor.

Recall that a detonation occurred at the assembly complex on Sunday evening as the chamber was being demolished.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., lawmakers were observed driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts immediately following the session.

Following the gunshot and teargas release, people fled in all directions as detectives pursued them, including workers whose offices were located in the area.
