LASG to upgrade its health technology college to autonomous institution
The Lagos State Government (LASG) says it has started the process of upgrading the status of the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHT), Yaba, to an autonomous institution.
Mr. Tolani Sule, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Lagos State, made this known at a two-day management retreat organised by LASCOHT on Friday in Lagos.
The retreat has the theme “Creating a Global Standard Learning Culture for Lagos State College of Health Technology.”
The commissioner said that the upgrading would expand and improve the institution’s learning environment, employment, and salary structures.
“We noticed that the system of this college is still in line with those of the civil service, but it should be in line with other tertiary institutions in order to enjoy autonomy.
“You need your own employment, promotion, and salary structures to boost the college’s personality.
“Plans are underway by the state government to undertake a total upgrading of the academic and physical structures of the college to enhance its complementary role towards fostering excellent learning,” Sule said.
He urged all academic and non-academic staff of the college to continue to cooperate with its new leadership to boost the college’s personality and operations as a health institution.
Sule said, “Work harder and acquire more knowledge because teaching and learning have become easier with the help of advanced technology.”
Prof. Banji Fajonyomi of the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Science, Lagos State University (LASU), advised the management of the institution to concentrate more on students’ learning rather than grades.
Fanjonyomi said that students should be given opportunities to participate in lecture discussions, tackle problems, and present findings.
“Mentorship is key. We should be more than lecturers, because each student has individual needs.
“We should show care, empathy, respect, and emotional support.
“Creating a conducive research environment in the college by continuously inducing the teachers through workshops, projects, and seminars is very important,” he said.
Mr. Lukman Olumoh, the Chairman,Economic Planning & Budget Committee, Lagos State House of Assembly, urged the management to introduce technology to drive revenue allocation for the institution’s development.
Olumoh said that the management needed to ensure adequate implementation of internal control policies and procedures.
“Communication is key to ensuring that people understand the programs and projects of governance, particularly where the resources are scarce and inadequate,” he said.
