"my husband and some people were involved in one illegal act."

Favour Nweke, a resident of Rivers State, was arrested by members of a vigilante group and turned over to the Rivers State Police Command for pouring hot groundnut oil on her spouse, Ekelediri Nwokekoro Nweke, while he was sleeping in Okehi, Etche Local Government Area on Tuesday.

After perpetrating the crime that resulted in her husband's hospitalisation, the woman who was paraded on Friday had fled.

Nweke told reporters during her parade at the headquarters of the Rivers State Police Command on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt, "He will leave around 2:00 a.m. and return in the wee hours of the morning.

"He would sometimes leave for two or three days before returning.

"I then asked him, Where exactly are you going?

"Therefore, his friend called me and asked if I had received the news:

"I questioned, 'What is that?'

"He stated that my spouse and a few others were involved in a criminal act.

"He stated that they convinced a man from Abuja to come and work in Etche under the pretence that they had a contract for him, and when he arrived, they bilked him out of N20 million.

"I stated that he did not notify me and that I was hearing this information for the first time.

"I said, 'No wonder he's been acting strangely; he's been planning a trip to an African nation.'"

"This is the explanation.

"When he returned, I confronted him and informed him of what I had heard, but he refused, and we argued.

"We put an end to it that day.

"I then inquired as to what he did with his portion of the money.

"I heard that some individuals purchased land with their own money.

"So, what did you do with your own?

"As we discussed the issue that morning, he struck me.

"I rushed into the kitchen with the oil and doused him with it.

"This is how it transpired.

"I feel awful.

"Had I known the outcome of this situation, I would not have done it to him.

"I will simply go home and stay.

"I am pleading for forgiveness from Nigerians; please accept my apology."

The Command's Commissioner, CP Emeka Nwonyi, pledged that Nweke would be held accountable for her actions.
