Philanthropist donates building to A’Ibom NYSC
Ekwe said the building is tastefully furnished with beddings, curtains, reading tables, chairs, upholstery seat and kitchen utensils for corps members comfort.
An Akwa Ibom-born philanthropist, Dr. Jeremiah Udoh, has donated a two-story building with 22 self-contained apartments and two common rooms to serve as a corpers’ lodge.
The building was donated specifically for corps members serving at Obot Akara Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Udoh’s Alma Mater.
The State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Chinyere Ekwe, disclosed this at the official opening and swearing in of 2023 Batch B Stream 1 corps members at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai Local Government Area (LGA), on Friday.
Ekwe said the building is tastefully furnished with bedding, curtains, reading tables, chairs, upholstery seats, andkitchen utensils for corps members comfort.
She commended Udoh for his kind gesture and appealed to other well-meaning indigenes of the state to emulate him.
“I will like to use this medium to further appreciate Udoh, a renowned philanthropist and indigene of Obon Ukwa Community in Obot Akara LGA, who single-handedly built a twin-story building of 22 self-contained apartments and two common rooms.
“In fact, the lodge is the best in Akwa Ibom,” Ekwe said.
She further said that 1,565 corps members, comprising 703 males and 862 females, were registered and ready for the orientation course.
She urged the corps members to avail themselves of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme of the NYSC.
According to her, SAED is packaged to provide them with a veritable platform to overcome the challenges of post-service unemployment.
“I implore you therefore to key into it and take the in-camp SAED training very seriously for your own benefit.
“I urge you to internalise the ideals of the national service as enshrined in the oath of allegiance.
“I also encourage you to study all publications issued to you at the point of your documentation, obey all camp rules and regulations, and participate actively in all camp activities,” Ekwe said.
She expressed profound appreciation to the State Government for its support of the scheme.
She appealed to the government not to relent in improving the camp infrastructure, pointing out that the camp was not connected to the national grid for power supply.
She commended all the Heads of Security Agencies in the state and other collaborating agencies for their maximum support of the NYSC.
In a remark, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, assured the corps members of their safety throughout their stay in the state.
He urged them not to engage in any activity that would endanger their lives and safety in their places of primary assignment.
“Do not join cultism or engage in drugs to enhance your energy while in your place of primary assignment.
“Endure to write your name in gold by making a positive impact.
“Say no to unnecessary travel. We have lost so many corps members by that means.
“I want to assure you that you are in safe hands.
“We will do our best to protect your lives,” Durosinmi said.
Supreme News reports that the oath of allegiance was administered to the corps members by Justice Gabriel Ette, who represented the state Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Obot.
