Security guards jailed 24 months each for sleeping on duty

An Area Court in Jos on Monday sentenced two security guards to 24 months imprisonment for sleeping on duty and paving way for the theft of two vehicle engines worth N900,000, .

The Judge, Mr Thomas Ajitise, sentenced Abubakar Adam and Gambo Bukas after they pleaded guilty to the offence of negligence of duty and begged the court for leniency.

Ajitse gave the convicts an option of N100,000 fine each or 24 months imprisonment and asked them to pay N 90, 000, each as compensation to the complainant.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gowkat, told the court that the case was reported at the Laranto Police station on May 10, by Mr Segun Peter.

He said that the convicts, who are security guards at Mr Peter’s mechanic garage, slept off on duty and paved way for thieves to steal two vehicle engines worth N900,000, .

The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation the accused persons pleaded guilty to the offence.

The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
